Why do religious people think it is appropriate to divorce?

obviously if their husband/wife is abusing them then it isn't a sin as detailed in the bible, but otherwise why is it deemed ok? Do they not take their vows seriously? Have the atheists and Government eroded marriage to the point that people see it appropriate to divorce for trivial reasons, sometimes several times?
